Watch the interview at One Greener TV. Click the On Demand button for a list of interviews and current green news. Discover more about the film and where to watch it on their website.

About the film:
A ferocious kill on the Serengeti… warnings about endangered species! These cliches of nature documentaries disregard a key part of the landscape: villagers just off-camera who navigate the dangers and costs of living with wildlife.

Africa is emerging from a history of “white man conservation” that displaced indigenous people, banned subsistence hunting, and fueled resentment. Now, a revolution in grass-roots wildlife conservation is turning poachers into protectors. But change doesn’t come easy.

With memorable characters and spectacular locations, MILKING THE RHINO tells joyful, penetrating and heartbreaking stories from Kenya and Namibia - revealing the high stakes obstacles facing Community Conservation today.

Benj Gershman
O.A.R. (an acronym for the band's full moniker, Of a Revolution) transformed themselves from local Ohio State University bandmates to Billboard chartbusters and headliners at venues across America. First, the band's two demo recordings were hawked at universities. Then, news spread about the band's roots rock and reggae-inflected songs, which owed much to the jam band genre. Before long, O.A.R.'s website had turned into a highly-trafficked internet destination, and the group gradually left the college scene for the bright lights of national stardom.

Formed in 1996 in Rockville, MD, O.A.R. coalesced around lead singer/rhythm guitarist Marc Roberge, lead guitarist Richard On, saxophonist Jerry DePizzo, bassist Benj Gershman, and drummer Chris Culos. Roberge had known Culos since childhood; he also played in local bands with On and Gershman. DePizzo, who hails from Youngstown, OH, met the other Maryland natives at Ohio State, and the band made its recorded debut with the release of an independent demo, 1997's The Wanderer. Many of the songs on O.A.R.'s debut disc were written while Roberge and Culos were living in Israel.

Two years later, the switch from student band to headlining act started with the arrival of an intensely popular song titled "That Was a Crazy Game of Poker." (Many lyrics for the band's songs came from Roberge's interest in literature, particularly Stephen King's novel -The Stand.) The group went back into the recording studio for a second demo, which was released independently as Souls Aflame in 1999. With the success of 2001's Risen, Roberge began writing songs for a new CD late that year. To appease their dedicated fan base, they issued a live album, Any Time Now, in the spring of 2002 and subsequently signed with Lava/Atlantic for the release of 2003's In Between Now and Then. Additional tour dates led to the release of 34th & 8th, the band's second live offering. The band returned to the studio again with 2005's Stories of a Stranger, which contained a pair of Top 20 Hot AC hits in "Love and Memories" and "Heard the World." The Live from Madison Square Garden CD/DVD appeared in 2007. O.A.R.'s slickest album yet, the commercially-minded All Sides, was released in 2008. Robert Hicks, All Music Guide

Of a Revolution, better known as O.A.R., American rock band consisting of Marc Roberge (vocals, guitar), Chris Culos (drums, percussion), Richard On (guitar, backing vocals), Benj Gershman (bass guitar), Jerry DePizzo (saxophone, guitar, backing vocals). Due to massive online distribution over campus networks, the band has become a hit among college students, with many songs relating to the band members' personal lives at Ohio State University (Columbus) and growing up in Rockville, Maryland.

  • In the summer of 2008, O.A.R. launched the "All Sides Tour" to promote their new album of the same name, which began June 15 in Manchester, TN at Bonnaroo and concluded August 31 at the Gorge as an opening act for the Dave Matthews Band.
  • The first radio single for All Sides, "Shattered (Turn the Car Around)", was released for download on June 13th. It has been the band's biggest hit to date, surpassing "Love And Memories".
  • In June 2008 the song "This Town", also from All Sides, was used extensively by ESPN during its coverage of the 2008 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament and College World Series.
  • O.A.R.'s song "Wonderful Day" is currently being used on nationally airing Ford commercials.
  • In December 2008, VH1 named the music video for "Shattered" as number 18 on their Top 40 Videos of 2008, saying that "O.A.R. is no longer this well-kept secret; they finally have broken through to mainstream."
  • O.A.R. performed three songs for Fox News Channel's 2008 New Year's Eve uParty coverage live in Times Square in New York City on December 31, 2008. The filming took place on Sunday December 27, 2008. The three songs played and also aired were: "Shattered", "Living In The End" and "This Town".
  • On January 9, 2009 O.A.R. lead singer, Marc Roberge, did a charity concert to benefit the Connecticut National Guard at Hopkins School in New Haven, CT performing many of the band's hit songs solo (accompanying himself with an acoustic guitar) including Love and Memories, Shattered, and This Town.

February 4, 2009 Radio Show Summary

Sustainable Clothing
Topics covered:
Organic Cotton, Green Fabrics, Sustainable Business Practices, Social Responsibility, Fair Trade

One key idea came out of this show: As consumers, buy higher quality, but less. This means you can afford fewer clothes but the ones you have last longer, be made in equitable (non-sweatshop) places, and have a smaller impact on the environment.

Patagonia quotes:
“Mistreatment of garment workers is not just the result of global competition for low-price products, factory greed or malfeasance. It can also be the result of inefficiency, not only at the factory but also on the part of the company buying the goods. Last-minute changes to orders, unreasonable price demands and hurry-up delivery times can exacerbate already difficult conditions on the factory floor. This practice of 'instant business' causes disruptions in production and company relationships. Patagonia's desire to build long-term relations with their factories, sets them apart in this lowest priced supply chain world. For some companies finding an item for five cents less is reason for shifting to the a new factory. Factory owners therefore are not looking at long term practices in sustainability based on the demand from conscious companies, they are looking at lowest price.

February 4, 2009 Show Guests:

Jill Dumain, Director of Environmental Analysis at technical outdoor clothing company, Patagonia, Inc., attended the University of California at Davis majoring in Textiles and Clothing. Her studies at Davis included textile science, marketing and production courses, in conjunction with courses from the business school. While at Davis, she worked as a student intern at Patagonia, Inc., and upon graduation, began working in the company’s Fabric Laboratory testing and analyzing technical fabrics in the product line. Two years later, she moved into the Fabric Development department and began working on the development and sourcing of Patagonia’s sportswear fabrics. This position led into leadership of the company’s environmental strategies in fabrications, specifically, the organic cotton project. In 1998, she became Director of Fabric Development, and in the spring of 2003, moved in to a new position as Patagonia’s Environmental Analysis Manager. Today, she is Patagonia’s Director of Environmental Analysis, leading the charge on reducing the company’s environmental footprint. Her past and current projects have included some of the following: The Common Threads Recycling Program, The Footprint Chronicles, solar panel installation at Patagonia’s Ventura, CA campus, environmental regulation of the company’s factories via Bluesign, green building efforts, eco-friendly fabric research and more. Throughout her tenure at Patagonia, she has traveled extensively throughout Asia, Europe and the U.S. visiting fabric manufacturers and interfacing with other companies committed to environmental responsibility. http://patagonia.com
